Sophie Harding

Sophie’s work is all about simplicity, harmony and balance. For us, it’s her combination of colours, textures and her semi-abstract style that make her paintings so uniquely captivating. Each colour manages to stand boldly on its own whilst simultaneously interacting with others - to glow, clash and sing.

Sophie graduated from Central Saint Martins in 1992 and has worked as a painter, illustrator and textile designer ever since. She lives in Penzance, five minutes from the sea and works mainly from life, be it a collection of objects in her home or a morning spent capturing images on the beach. Through her simplification of form and sense of stillness her works focus on the small but simple joys we find in our everyday lives.

3 Minutes with Sophie…

Where is your favourite place to create art?
In my studio, It’s tiny but has everything I need and puts me in the right mode for creating work. It’s compact, colourful and light-filled.

Where is your dream place to see one of your works hanging?
Aiming high for this one but I would love to see my work hanging in the Tate St Ives!

What keeps you going through the day?
Coffee, tea, biscuits, radio 4 and the company of Tess, my lovely whippet.
